failed to agree an electoral pact |
Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, the leaders of the two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), failed to agree an electoral pact.
They will both run for president, a course that will split the anti-Mugabe vote and ensure defeat for both men.
Mr Mutambara apologised with a “heavy heart” for the failure and said that Mr Tsvangirai had rejected a “reunification agreement”.
For his part, Mr Tsvangirai said: “We failed as an opposition to unite, it is unfortunate but this is the reality. The electorate will figure out on their own which candidate they prefer. There is disagreement and we can’t force it down the people’s throat.”
One opposition MP described the MDC’s internecine warfare as “insanity”.
The MDC’s factions will also run parliamentary candidates against one another, virtually guarantee a majority for Mr Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party. Guardian UK
